[PSUBS-MAILIST] Happy new year.

Just Fyi, but WhatsApp is also a facebook/Meta product (as is instagram).
Although my relatives in Argentina use it, and some in the UK.

Signal is a better alternative (by a non-profit group), but it's hard persuading 100s of people to switch to it.

Recently I’ve noticed a third alternative seems to be gaining traction, and it’s one I use myself and absolutely love. Outside the US, virtually everyone I know uses WhatsApp. You can use it to make phone calls, but for the purpose of this discussion the functionality to use would be an ongoing discussion thread. You can attach anything, images, video, etc. A lot of people use it with audio recordings, rather than tapping out a message. I have two such groups, which are both very active; one for family (I’ve 15 first cousins) and another for high school friends. It’s so convenient, I hardly use FB at all. And all my phone or video calls with anyone outside the US are WhatsApp calls.

There's little doubt FB makes it easy to share photos and documents...something the mailing list just won't support very well. My biggest concern is the lack of privacy as the company collects information about every little piece of minutia that you look at or contribute then shares that info with other companies and worse yet, with the government. FB doesn't provide settings to circumvent that.

Michael, By hacked, do you mean duplicated?
Duplicating an account is easy, & I've seen it done several times.
I tell people to adjust their settings so only friends can see your friends list. Or alternatively no one can see your friends list.
With those settings no hacker could be bothered duplicating your account, because without access to your friends there is no point in impersonating you.
