A K350 stern thruster is how many HP? Not sure, but you can probably count them on one hand. Yet they move along quite well, I think at 3 knots. I don’t think I’ve ever got past 4 knots no matter how big the tow boat! The sub just misbehaves in every way beyond that. Of course, it’s very different for streamlined subs like the Nektons.

The tow vessel then just acts as a propulsor of the composite. This works well when the tow vessel is small compared to the towed, and has the added advantage of being able to maneouver the composite as though it were a single large vessel, with steerage and reversing, etc.

I have towed partially submerged sailboats with 90 hp in the past and still not moved faster than I could swim. Consider the 9.9 an emergency shepherding option.

Out of the crate, most small outboards come equipped with a screw optimized for top speed (3 blade, highly cupped, highly raked, aggressive pitch), where, for example, a 5-bladed prop with lower pitch wouldn't have the same speed capability on plane but would be much better suited to towing. Could potentially be an easy change to make / procure.

> Well friends, it would seem that perhaps I spoke too soon when I offered the services of the new Zodiac at next year's event in Michigan. The boat itself is actually inbound this week via truck freight. It had no delays at port because coming in from Europe, it entered the country on the Atlantic side and avoided the major snafu currently plaguing our Pacific coast ports. But I've run into a snag with the motor... Major ordering backlogs with almost all new outboards! I had my sights set on a Yamaha 25-hp short shaft, tiller-operated outboard due to the high-efficiency motor and great power:weight ratio but it looks like if I order one right now, it'll be a 6 to 9 month lead-time due to major supply chain disruptions. I'll be meeting with my local Yamaha dealer tomorrow to discuss options but at this point it looks like I have two viable routes: order now and wait -or- look for a decent used engine for sale. I do have a 9.9-hp outboard that I could use in the interim if I decide to order a new motor and wait it out, but for the purpose of towing subs I think a 25-hp is necessary. I'll keep you all apprised of progress with the new boat, but wow I am disappointed that so many different things I used to take for granted (that you could just go out and buy) are getting very difficult to find. Not good. ~ Doug S.

When I was on, there were about 6 others that were on as well but no one had their cameras turned on so I didn't either. Was there a reason as it would be nice to see everyone as well.
