When I had the large DC traction motor I would notice that magnetic field generated by the motor and wiring distorted the reading relative to amount of current. That is at low speed, when the motor was not drawing much power, the compass was spot on but as I increased the boat speed and the motor current would increase that the compass heading would be shifted 20-30 degrees. When you let off the throttle, it would return to original heading. I don't care about what direction I am going-I just want to go in a strait line. I will point the sub in the direction I want to go at the surface, then turn on the gyro and sink.
