That vest is very similar to the Stinke hood without the hood. I find if the Stinke hood is manually inflated it is very manageable and I can get out of the sub easily. When it is inflated from submarine hp air it is rock hard and restricts my movement. Maybe your vest is a better option with a spare air.<br>

Hank, I have a Buddy Pacific ablj<br>
which is an older type diving jacket (we used to call them<br>
the "toilet seat"). Emile and Carsten did a load<br>
of testing of escape and decided this was the best<br>
compromise. The jacket is a life jacket and also had a<br>
small air tank, plus regulator so you can breath and fill<br>
the jacket. There is a manual dump valve for releasing<br>
air. I have done emergency ascents<br>
using a similar type of jacket while doing diving training<br>
and although the dump valve is manual, I have found that as<br>
the air in the jacket expands as you ascent rapidly, the air<br>
releases from the dump valve anyway, forcing its way past. <br>
Its not ideal but the jacket stays<br>
intact. Its one of these. <br>

My understanding is these cartridges have about 800 psi<br>

them, so they should be able to inflate at depth albeit<br>
much<br>

more slowly than on the surface. I do expect they will<br>
reach<br>
<br>
only a fraction of their normal volume at depth given<br>
the<br>
<br>
amount of gas in the cartridge, so they will provide only<br>
a<br>
<br>
very slow start toward the surface. But the difficulty<br>
with<br>
<br>
the Steinke hoods is getting them on in such a confined<br>
<br>
space. Maybe in the new sub I could store some spare<br>
trawl<br>

floats in the cabin (there's more space) for speeding<br>

swimming ascent. <br>
