<div><font class="Apple-style-span" size="3">I'm not sure how useful a TV periscope would be, especially when considering the weight and complexity of something you don't use very much. Besides that, light weight, in my experience, means one of two things at sea: bent or broken. As for the camera boom idea, I've seen a bunch of fine film made from a small camera piggy-backed right onto a manipulator. It saves you the need for a pan and tilt unit, can be stowed out of the way, and tells no lies about what you are trying to filch off the bottom. Operating subs without surface support is inviting trouble. They are your collision avoidance. Even in poor viz, you stop a few feet underwater and release an air bubble from the MBTs for them to locate you. We did that even with the most sophisticated tracking, just for visual confirmation.</font></div>
