For me, a very interesting thing is that Forrest Mims designed one of the monitors, and he refers to a Radio Shack part.  I thought Radio Shack was long gone (like Fawcett Publications, Herbach and Rademan, J. J. Meshna, and others).  It exists:  https://www.radioshack.com/

I also thought Mims was a lot older  than he turned out to be:

That issue of Make also has an article on a shark tracker.  That might suggest some other underwater projects.
