James, sounds like an oxygen candle. The US Navy has them aboard submarines for oxygen generating in addition to the scrubbers.

I had a visit a while ago from an x Pisces pilot and owner of the morzh submersible they operated at vobster quay England.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PzjrXBT6U0.  He told me this boat had a Russian made device that converted co2 to 02 and he had no scrubber, or 02 supply on board.  The by products were heat and c0 which I’m not sure how he dealt with that.
Anyway, just thinking aloud really as I’m off work sick after having the covid vaccine...
