Hank,
I haven't dived much in lakes; but a couple of years ago I was scuba diving in a 
90 ft deep quarry, & hit a thermocline at about 30ft. I couldn't see my hand in 
front of my face. I saw a dark line rise up my mask as I descended into it. 
Some sort of algal bloom!
Can it clear up deeper down if you persevere through it?
