As far as I know is this not been used in private / research subs since 1620
Pressurized O2 is much more practical. Even the smallest bottle will provide hours of breathing..

Has anyone here ever tried to cook a sodium chlorate candle for emergency oxygen generation? It seems that having a shelf stable, non pressurized oxygen source would be useful in a standard K250 or 350 that might not have an oxygen tank. What are the downsides of this approach?
